Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is working hard to stabilize the national grid, but these efforts have led to frequent power outages, disrupting daily life and businesses across the country.
In areas like San Pedro Town and Ambergris Caye, these power outages have had severe repercussions to tourism (the country’s largest economic sector ). Schools nationwide have been forced to cancel classes, affecting students' education. While large businesses have backup generators, many medium and small establishments have had to close during outages, resulting in lost business and perished goods. Some small business owners have even gone into debt to purchase generators, and residents have faced the burden of replacing damaged appliances due to power surges.
Fortunately, primary health facilities have remained operational thanks to their generators, ensuring that critical medical equipment continues to function.
To help mitigate the impact of these power outages and prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, we are raising funds to purchase small solar power generators for families in Belize. These generators will provide a reliable source of electricity during blackouts, helping families maintain essential services land protect their livelihoods.
